MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether) is made from the reaction of methanol and isobutylene. It is used almost exclusively as a fuel additive in motor gasoline. It is an 'oxygenate' that raises the oxygen content of gasoline. At room temperature, it is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid that dissolves in water.
